Interview with Bu, our friend from Renhala

In preparing the interview room, I’ve noticed our main source of light, a lamp in the corner keeps flickering. After turning it on and off, on and off, and even screwing the bulb a bit tighter, I have decided to let it be, and hope that our new guest will not be disturbed by it. I think I hear him now. I’ve been told ahead of time that grebles from Renhala are quite large, but man, he sounds GINORMOUS. Someone also told me that Bu is harmless, unlike others of his kind, so I shouldn’t be scared. Whatever. I’ve handled my share of creatures *ex-boyfriend enters thoughts*.

*Heavy breathing in doorway* “Um, Bu is here.” He ducks through the doorway to enter the room, but glides quickly with his three legs (And yes, he’s big). He nervously fidgets with some large fanny pack-type thing around his waste and adjusts his large torn shorts, as he tries to pat down his crazy, unruly brown sprouts of hair across his body.

I sink in my chair, slightly frightened. Um, hi, Bu! Nice to have you here today. Please, have a seat. Wait! Too late as six-hundred pound Bu attempts to sit in a too-small chair for his massiveness, breaking it into multiple pieces.

“Oh! Bu so sorry! Bu big . . .” His downturned mouth quivers as he holds back, what I think may be a sob. He actually looks adorable while doing it, and almost looks harmless.

Don’t worry about that chair. It was old, anyways. Are you comfortable with just sitting on the floor? I’m sorry we don’t have any other chair for you. Here. Here’s some blankets. *Holding my nose from the smell emanating from his body* Ok, I’m just going to go back to my chair now, after I light this vanilla candle. *gag*

“Thank you, miss.” He sits indian-style, looking downwards, embarrassed.

Before we begin with questions, I brewed some tea, would you like a cup?

“Yes, Bu would love tea!” He suddenly looks up as I hand it to him in one of my new elegant tea cups, but he suddenly puts it down next to him, not wanting a sip. “Bu save this for Kailey. Kailey love tea.”

Okay, then. Guess I lose a new tea cup, already. Bu, first question: I was wondering which realm you-Bu is now standing up, working his way over to the flickering lamp. So sorry about that, shall I have someone get another lamp while we continue our conversation?

“Bu fix this.”

Oh, no, you don’t have to!  Really! As I reach Bu he already has the lamp in pieces. Okay, then. Guess I lose a lamp, too. I watch as he pulls multiple tools and extremely tiny gadgets for his rather large hands from his fanny pack. He moves quickly and the look on his face is one of sheer concentration as he works with the pieces. Within minutes he has the lamp back together, with absolutely no flickering whatsoever. Wow, Bu. That was . . . amazing.

“Bu likes fixing electronics. It just a frayed wire. Bu just stripped wire and crimped and reassembled.”

Um . . . okay, whatever that means. Thanks. Now back to my first question: I was wondering, between the two realms, which one you-Bu is standing up once again, looking up at a vent, where a new knocking sound has started.

“Bu go fix that, too.” He leaves the room quickly as I sink back into my chair, resting my head on my hand.

*Sigh*

Kailey Rooke, timid accountant, dedicated to philanthropic work, finds herself spiraling into a deep depression after she suffers a horrifyingly odd and humiliating assault, to only discover more of these freakish assaults occurring across the globe.

A chance discovery leads Kailey to a meeting with elderly Gunthreon, actual master of persuasion. Gunthreon, who seems to know too much of Kailey’s history for her liking, opens Kailey’s eyes to a coexisting realm she never knew existed: Renhala, while entrusting her with the knowledge of her newfound power as karmelean, serving as a beacon to the Higher Ones. Kailey slowly starts revealing new talents, and Gunthreon is fascinated with what she starts achieving.

She soon discovers that Renhala is in danger, and this danger has been leaking into her own realm. As she uncovers secrets within herself, and attempts to toughen up, she fuses with an unlikely band of fellow travelers (including a dragon, woodsprite, six-hundred-pound greble, her faithful female canine companion, and a “giver”), falls into an unexpected love triangle, deals with her sexy and flirtatious best friend’s “issues,” and finds the courage to master a new deadly weapon.

On her mission to save Renhala, Kailey will find herself running from life-threatening disasters, such as greble Tartarin, who likes to remind Kailey that when he catches her, he plans on eating her brains with ice cream; she’ll run from the deadly meeples: small cute bunnies with talons and an undeniable thirst for imposing self-destruction on others. Kailey will also run into the possibility that a centuries-old Renhalan rumor is true, that advanced technology existing in Kailey’s realm shortens all life spans.

As blood is shed and puzzles near completion, Kailey pulls from deep within herself, conjuring up mystical qualities that enable her to astonish as once predicted at her birth, but despite the newfound strength, Kailey will discover that monsters not only come in ugly packages, but can be easily disguised as those she has come to love and trust.
