My Heroines Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Capes

By Anna Alexander

A super hero is more than a paranormal character dressed in spandex and a mask. They risk their lives time and again to defend their fellow man and deal with the pressures of living a double life. This dichotomy is why I ache when Spiderman loses another lady love and go weak in the knees when Bruce Wayne cracks a smile. Watching these strong men struggle to keep their loved ones out of the villain’s hands while remaining true to their heroic nature is why we love the superhero journey.
I tend to write hero-centric stories, so you can imagine my surprise when I realized that the true “hero” of my novel, Hero Revealed, was actually the heroine. Brett Briggs may have a man’s name and work in a male dominated profession, but she’s every inch a lady. Her love interest is a banished warrior from a distant planet, and on Earth he uses his super powers to protect the woman he’s come to love. The only problem with that plan is Brett doesn’t need a man to save her. Even though she’s human and lacks super powers, Brett is more than capable of kicking ass when needed, which she does without apology.

That’s what I, as a reader, want in a story. My favorite heroines are the ones who rise above their fear and take action to make their lives better. Are they frightened to face the unknown? Hell yeah. But it’s the courage they display that keeps me turning the pages. A great heroine doesn’t need super powers to rise above diversity. She just does. But …you gotta admit, there are some powers that would be awesome to possess.

Blurb of Hero Revealed:
As a female sheriff in a small town, Brett Briggs faces enough obstacles turning complacent good ol’ boys into a top-notch police force without the added insult of a vigilante apprehending her criminals. Her prime suspect? Kristos Kilsgaard, the sexy river guide who has been open in his desire to move her away from her badge and into his bed.

In his former position as royal guard, Kristos once failed a woman he cared for and as punishment was banned from his home on one of Saturn’s moons. He vows not to make the same mistake with Brett and uses his superpowers to protect her, no matter the foe. Or the cost.

But Brett didn’t become sheriff by letting a man take care of her, and although the hot-as-hell Kristos is persuasive, she’s not going to start now—even after burning it up between the sheets with him. When her town is threatened, they cry out for a hero and she sets out to prove to everyone, Kristos included, that she’s the woman for the job.
