Guest Post with Giveaway: The Wolf Of Arundale Hall by Jennifer Leeland

First of all, I’d like to thank Iris for letting me participate in her Shifters and Wares event.
For those of you who know me, you’re probably stunned I’m participating on any site with the word “Shifter” or “Werewolf” in it.

I’ve skirted the paranormal aspects of erotic romance with my science fiction series, but when Lord Joshua Arundale started his annoying campaign to be written, I had to dive in completely.

Now, this story was out of my comfort zone.  Joshua, as some characters will, lied to me from the beginning and it took a lot of hair pulling to get the real story.  While I was struggling to get Joshua to give me the real story, I had to have some inspiration.

How did I stay inspired? Music.

There have been several books I’ve read that have a soundtrack in my head.  When I read “Dune” by Frank Herbert, for some reason the whole “Eye in the Sky” album from The Alan Parson’s Project always plays in my mind.  Music and books have always gone hand in hand with me.  I love it when authors share their playlists.  So I thought I’d share a couple with you.

Ignoring the fact that creating a playlist for a book is time consuming and a great time waster…it did help me stay in the right mood.  It isn’t easy to find music that will depict the 19th Century, so instead, most of my choices helped me stay in that gothic paranormal mood.

Several songs from Stream of Passion (http://www.streamofpassion.com) and Evanescence (http://www.evanescence.com) were on that playlist, but the first two were the most important.  Interestingly, the videos are relevant.

This one made for the song “What Lies Beneath” by Breaking Benjamin has scenes from

“The Prestige” a movie set in the 19th century.

and “Stand My Ground” by Within Temptation captures the gothic paranormal feel.

I’m giving away an ecopy (or maybe two) of “The Wolf of Arundale” and all you have to do is comment and let me know what music inspires you.
Lady Elizabeth Arundale has been alone for ten years—or worse than alone. Her husband left for Jamaica soon after their wedding night, leaving her responsible for his catty, high-maintenance cousin and his wastrel brother. Elizabeth knows the secret that caused her husband to flee—when his passions are roused, he turns into a ravening Beast.

Lord Joshua has no choice but to return to Arundale Hall when his man of business tells him there has been a murder on the estate—a murder that bears all the hallmarks of the Beast. He fears that his brother, too, may have inherited the curse. And he fears that he will be unable to control his deviant desires. The dark sexual practices that keep the Beast at bay. The unspeakable perversions he wished to spare his wife. The brutal bonding his inner animal is desperate to experience with its mate.

Reader Advisory: This story contains scenes of voyeurism, BDSM and violence.

  • Just finished my very first attempt at a novel. Half way through things started to get tough so I sat back looking at music and Chose a cd I havent listened to in a while. It worked, Enya pulled me through to the end.

  • Hi Jennifer! This book sounds REALLY good! Music that inspires me is 80s music. I love the upbeat tempo and the happy easy-going feel of those songs. A few faves are Cyndi Lauper, WHAM, Culture Club, A-ha, and Duran Duran. Thanks for the guest post and for the chance to win!

  • Whatever mood I’m in, I turn on U2. Whether I need to be soothed, or inspired, their music always works. Anytime I’m doing a difficult hike, I just put Bono on and I’m good to go.

    • I couldn’t seem to find the button to just reply! Must need more coffee.

Lately I’ve been inspired by E.S. Posthumous. I love their riff on Moonlight Sonata and the music is so dramatic and theatrical. When I’m really feeling like I suck eggs at writing, for some reason Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance picks me up. In an ironical way, you know? 🙂

No need to enter me as I just couldn’t resist grabbing a copy right away.

  • Oooh, the book sounds super. I really hope I win.

I’m a writer, too, and I need wordless music (or music sung in a foreign language) for writing. The soundtrack from the movie “Gladiator” revs me up when I’m writing sex scenes. For happy happy scenes, I’ll sometimes listen to “Chocolat, or “Ratatoullie.” 🙂 But most of the time these days, I like silence.

  • I what inspires me depends on my mood its 80s pop and hip hop to get the cleaning done,if empowerment its destinys child ,pink, shania twain etc. lol, want to take on the world give me some ac/dc or metallica..Thank you for sharing with us and for giving us the chance to win.Have a great weekend

  • I love the 80’s and 90’s music. I do have a habit of falling back to Beethoven and Mozart and from time to time Tchaikovsky

    • I do notice that what I listen to regularly and what ends up on my book playlists is sometimes pretty different.
I had a book that was exclusively Britney Spears songs! Not something I listen to normally.

  • thanks for a great post and giveaway! Congrats on the new release! It sounds fabulous 🙂

I love anything really… Beyonce, Katy Perry, Pink, Linkin Park, Maroon 5… I guess whatever my mood is.

  • “This Night” by Black Lab for the beasts within ourselves.
    “How It Ends” by Devotchka.
“Keep the Streets Empty for Me” by Fever Ray.
Those are the darker feeling ones.
On the lighter side maybe Telepopmusik, Republica, or Jem. I love music so I have eclectic tastes. Mostly depends on the mood what kind of mood I want to create.

  • I would have to go with Metallica’s music. Their music is beautiful, composed so well and with lyrics that tell stories. The guys in the band are great musicians and I never get tired of their music.

  • i Love RnB, Pop, Hip Hop. when hear those music its made my body start to dance. thanks for the giveaway and congratulations on the new release. cant wait to read 🙂

    • Thanks Olivia. Though I don’t use a lot of it on my playlists, I love Robert Cray (blues) and Diana Krall. Those are the artists that make me want to dance.

  • I think it depends on what I am doing, so if I’m doing house cleaning I want music like Michael Jackson or Kelly Clarkson, but if I’m reading I want to listen to Ricky Martin or Michael Buble. When I have a headache it helps if I put headphones on and listen to classical music.

    • Yes. Playlists for books are tough because the mood in the book changes frequently. There’s a heavy emotional scene and I need something more angsty. There’s a club scene and I need something sexy and dancy. (That’s totally a word. Pink made it so. LOL!). Keeping the mood is tough.
